FO0528 (Printing without extruding) on a brand new SPARKX i7 + CFS Lite — error appears right at print start after long idle time

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone here has seen this exact pattern, because it doesn’t match “normal wear” — my printer is brand new.

Setup:

  • SPARKX i7 + CFS Lite, machine is new (zero prior issues)

  • Filament: GST3D PLA+ High Speed, rated 180–210°C, printing at 200°C (Slot 2 in the CFS)

  • Slicer: Creality Print

Timeline: 0. Powered on the machine for the very first time and ran calibration. Then moved the printer to a different room (didn’t run a full calibration again after the move — not sure if that’s required).

  1. Printed the default purge bucket file that comes preloaded on the machine — 54 min, completed with zero issues.

  2. Loaded a downloaded project (screenshot attached — small mechanical/prop parts plate), switched to black filament in the same slot — printed for 3h03min with zero issues.

  3. Left the machine idle for 10+ hours (filament still loaded).

  4. Loaded a second downloaded project (screenshot attached — Megaman figure + bust + misc parts plate) — got FO0528 (printing without extruding) at only 2% completion, right at the very start of the print.

(Attaching both slicer plate screenshots below for reference.)

What doesn’t add up for me:

  • The machine has zero print hours before this — so I don’t think it’s mechanical wear on the extruder gear (yet).

  • The two previous prints (54 min and 3h+) ran flawlessly on the same slot/temperature.

  • The failure happened almost immediately after a long idle period, not mid-print or after heavy use.

My working theory: That the long idle time (10+ hours) with filament still loaded in the hotend/CFS channel caused either:

  • A small “plug” of oozed/cooled filament right at the start of the channel, which the extruder gear couldn’t push through and started grinding on, or

  • Some leftover residue from an earlier session where I had this same filament running at a higher temp (220–240°C) before I corrected the profile down to 200°C — possibly semi-carbonized material sitting in the heat break that only caused resistance once the machine cooled and reheated.

Question for the community:

  • Does the CFS retract filament back into the buffer during long idle periods, or does it stay parked in the hotend/toolhead?

  • Has anyone else seen FO0528 specifically triggered after long idle times rather than from cumulative print hours?

  • Any recommended maintenance step (e.g., cold pull, nozzle needle-clear at 250°C) specifically for after long idle periods, to prevent this on a fresh machine?

  • Does moving the printer to a different location right after first power-on (before any prints) require re-running calibration (bed leveling, belt tension, etc.), or is that only necessary if it’s moved after prints have already been done?

Appreciate any insight — trying to figure out if this is a settings/workflow issue on my end or something worth flagging to support given the machine is so new.

a mi tambien me esta pasando. de repente. llevo 300 horas con ellas e iba bien siempre. ahora no puedo imprimir nada de nada. no me dan solucion.

Hi buddies!

Following up on my own thread — I finally found the root cause, and it wasn’t the machine. It was the filament.

First, what I tried: I contacted Creality support and did every cleaning procedure they recommended (needle flush at high temp, cold pull, checking the extruder gear and PTFE path, cleaning the CFS channel). Sent a print… and FO0528 came back. Sometimes right at 2%, sometimes the print would start fine and fail after 20 minutes or an hour. That randomness made it look like a hardware fault.

What actually gave it away: whenever I printed Creality PETG, zero problems. Every failure happened with GST3D PLA+ High Speed — and not just one spool, two of them, white and black. Both left hard plugs in the hotend and both caused the error.

To confirm, I bought new spools from Elegoo and Multifila and printed with the same profile, same slot, same workflow. Not a single failure since. Same printer, same CFS Lite, only the filament changed.

So for anyone hitting FO0528 on a fresh SPARKX i7 + CFS Lite: if you’ve already done all the cleaning support tells you and it keeps coming back, try a different brand of filament before assuming the extruder or hotend is defective. Also, after a long idle period, heat the nozzle to ~220°C and manually extrude 20–30mm before printing — that clears any small plug.

Imanol, since your machine ran 300 hours fine and then suddenly stopped, check whether you changed spools or brands recently. Rule the filament out first.

Hope this helps someone.
