Random Filament Jams

Hey gang, I’m new to the forums and looking for some guidance. I’m relatively new to 3D printing and I purchased my Ender off FB Marketplace, so it was a used unit and I am pretty sure it’s the original version.

A few things about my machine first:
I have upgraded the Bowden tube to the Capricorn tube. I have also upgraded the extruder to the all metal extruder. The hot end was upgraded by the previous owner to a red anodized hot end (don’t know if that helps identify it). It also has a magnetic build plate on it and I upgraded the build plate adjusting screws to the red anodized metal ones with the silicone mounts instead of the springs. So it’s had some upgrades.

Now to my issue:
I’ve been struggling with this ever since I got this unit and have yet to solve the problem. It will print just fine for a random amount of time, and then it acts like the filament jammed inside the Bowden tube or something. It just stops feeding through to the hot end and the extruder grinds on it because it is still spinning. I’ve tried replacing my filament with a different spool, but that has not had any affect on the issue.
I thought maybe it was a filament drying issue, so I’ve purchased a dryer and used that. I have not seen any difference in the issue after that either. Sometimes it will only print for about a half hour before it does this “jam” thing. Sometimes, like yesterday, it’ll print for 17 hours before it does it (that print was literally 1 hour from finishing). It seems totally random and so far nothing I have done has had any affect on it. I’m stumped.

Thoughts? What would cause the filament to jam like this at totally random intervals? I’m using Sunlu standard PLA filament, which I thought was a good brand. I’m doing all my slicing in Creality Print using the stock settings for my printer and PLA. I couldn’t tell you specific retraction settings and such, because I’m not smart enough to understand all that, I just used the stock settings and let it do its thing.

Hi

Check the hotend cooling fan, these can fail and this will cause heat creep which can give your symptoms.

When you say “hot end cooling fan”, are you talking about the little fan mounted on the side of the hot end? -

I can see that fan spinning while the unit is running.
