Bed levelling firmware improvement - Creality please note!

Hi, I’ve been having first layer issues, particularly with hotter filaments, which I’m suspecting are caused by bed levelling at the wrong nozzle temperature. Watching the printer go through it’s pre-print routine, it always sets the nozzle temp to 140degrees for bed levelling, regardless of material type or job - it even waits while REDUCING the temp from 260 to 140 after printing the (optional) calibration patterns, before again levelling before starting the job proper. This is not only inefficient and slow, it’s also potentially setting the job up for failure! Please Creality, make a small mod to the firmware to run bed level at the nozzle printing temperature, to improve first layer experience and reduce pre-print setup time!

I’ve wondered about this too, and I have a theory on why Creality might stick with 140°C for leveling.

For example, ASA softens at just ~105°C, but I print it at 260°C. If the nozzle was at full printing temp while leveling, any filament sitting in the hot end and extruder path would likely liquify over the 5 minutes it takes to run a 9x9 mesh—heat creep would be a creepin’! :joy:

That could lead to inconsistent readings, possible oozing, and maybe even a higher chance of clogs depending on retractions during the process.

That said, I’d love to see an option to adjust bed leveling temp per filament in firmware. Would be interesting to test if something closer to each material’s softening point (not extrusion temp) could work better.

My theory could be totally off, but this was something I noticed when I first started playing with ASA—it’s not even a super high-temp filament, but definitely gets into that range! Curious to hear what others think.

Yes, my only idea was that of oozing of filament causing bad readings, but other printers I’ve used (Prusa) always leveled at full printing temp, and their first level is always PERFECT and I don’t remember any heat creep/clog issues (that’s what the hot-end fan is for! ) - so I come back to asking Creality to alter the firmware to bed level at printing temp, please!

Some where on reddit there is a reply from creality that there engineers dont recommend that. Cant find the reply back. I was searching for it for printing with petg. Didnt want to do a z-offset evry time before the print starts. when you change it in the fillament profile its not the same as that you change it just before the purge line is printed. At least that my Experience.

I can’t understand why that would be an issue - if the best in the industry (Prusa) does it, and they get superb results, why the heck wouldn’t everyone else. Would be interested to hear what bambu do - can anyone with a Bambu enlighten us?

Ello ello,

Just sent a print to my Qidi Q1Pro using PETG CF at 80 deg and it did its leveling at 80 deg before it started the print.

So, Qidi does it too.

Cheers.

The bed temp. Is ok . You cant set the nozzle temp to the appropriate temperatuur

Hello,

With my V3SE, it decides differently regards the bed temperature when leveling…
I would have thought that the bed temperature whilst leveling would need to be at the temperature you will print at.
Or am I missing something ? I tend to do that sometimes

Cheers.

with my ender 3 s1 pro i do a bedmesh with the temps for nozzle and bed i am going to print with.
