CFS Cardboard spool tip

Just something I’ve recently found when using cardboard spools in the CFS with the HI: as the spools are slightly smaller diameter than expected, the spring in the lid doesn’t push down on the rims. I’ve found the spool is ok up to about 1/3 of the filament left on the reel and retractions start to fail.
First solution: print rims to fit on the cardboard spools - often a pain, especially with different brands having slightly different diameters.

Quick solution: Pop a metal or stone ball inside the centre axis of the spool: steel ball bearing / lead ball / chinese hand massage ball (cheapest!) Only needs to be a 4cm diameter smooth ball. This is enough additional weight to keep the spool sitting on the rollers underneath. I had a few old hand massage balls lurking in a drawer and one of these is enough weight to solve the retraction issue.

there are several fixes for this on creality cloud, printable and maker world. you just need to decide which one you want to use on your CFS. this is very common. I do not recommend the spool adapters, they are ok but it is something you have to move every time you change filament or it needs to be refilled.

I found this updated universal spool and love it. I personally haven’t needed the fuzzy aspect he calls out, but this works really well for both cardboard and mini 250g spools.

Just do one of the pressure bar mods in the lid , there are many. That way you do not have to keep changing the spool adapter.
