Ender v3 - Extruder clicking/ grinding

Hi.
Been happy with my V3 for a month.
Today issues started that pointed to a block/clog.
Ran all the process even stripped extruder checked all is clear.
Start an extrude from menu, filement comes out no issue that i can tell.

Start to print, within 2 mins clicking from extruder and the print just hit and misses with gaps in filament, and clicking starts.

Stop print and run extrude, extrudes fine so not a block. (Maybe partial?)

Any ideas please.

Ps
The file im printing as worked on the printer previously, even a benchy di
does it.

Hello @Darkgoaty …!

Welcome to the Creality Forum…! Creality

Try going over your slicer settings to see what changed that would cause a problem.

Thanks Jim

Nothing changed as I can see.
The file is sliced and been used several times without issue.

Ive done a strip down again no block/clog but got advised it may be a partial clog in nozzle.

Followed a cold pull clean and ran a print.
Seems better and no cluncking.

Will post my result as it may be as simple as a a partial clog.

Also checked the filement tube wich seemed slightly melted so swapped that also while going through checks.

Fingers Crossed it was a simple as that.

Hopefully it’s something simple.

The clicking noise is when the extruder gears are slipping and can’t push the filament. Like you said it could be a partial clog causing the noise.

Sometimes filament that’s not dry can cause issues too…

I have the E3 and the plus. Great machines. Haven’t had any problems yet. Only user errors…

Hey Jim.

UPDATE:

SO! The same issue again happened.
This time catastrophic and almost set the machine on fire.

Filement totally filled the inner casing thankfully it took out the power to the board cutting the heat but on investigation the board looks wrecked as its pushed pins and some connections are scorched crumbled.

Cant clear nozzle as no longer can heat the machine up as cant connect it back in, not that id want to. , scarey glad i was keeping an eye on it.

Definitely something wrong in the extruder that just went from good to bad in one print.

Now in the laps of customer support.
5 weeks old the machine is.
Printed fine for 4 weeks although a little loud but got to a stage were this happens.

Will keep you updated on response from Creality.

Wish me luck !

Well, good luck with the response from Creality. They’re not the fastest responders!

The extruder clicking is, as somebody said, a sign that the gears are slipping and may not be pulling the filament through.

As for the blocked and clogged nozzle, I had the same issue a few weeks ago. I set about clearing with a heat gun and a pair of long-nosed pliers but it was a heck of a job! Then, a few days later, I had exactly the same issue but this time it had clogged up the entire print head. In trying to clear it I broke a couple of wires and had to turn to good old Amazon for spare parts. Replacing everything was fairly simple and didn’t cost too much - around £20UK or around 25 dollars US

Hope you get it sorted :+1:

Thanks.

They actually responded within 48hours.
Ive gotto see whats damaged and they are going to send the parts for repair.

The boards totally gone, filement broke wires and few connections, mainly hotend power.
Heatsink looks messed up, front casing and fan rendered useless.

Gotta try get some more cleared off tomorrow.
Had to order a heat gun.

It’s clear that there’s an internal blockage in the extruder. What’s your bed temperature set to? If it’s too high, filaments like PLA and PETG might soften and get stuck in the extruder gears after being compressed. To help with heat dissipation, you could try leaving the printer’s front door or top cover open during the print run.

Any Updates on parts and what caused it…?
