Falcon A1 Laser Engraving Help

Hey everyone. New to the forum. New to Creality. First time ever owning a laser machine. I love having it. I am learning all I can. I am trying to engrave some compasses for a church kids event and I am having an issue engraving and I am hoping someone can shed some light on my issue. I am testing out engraving on a batch of 4 compasses. They are all the same manufacturer. They look to be made out of thin shiny metal or brass. I have 4 set up in a tray I made to hold them still. Two compasses took the engraving just fine, one didn’t take the engraving at all and the last had only a partial engraving. I switch the compasses around in the tray and the ones that had issues engraving, still had issues engraving even in different spots. Why would this happen? It’s weird how some would engrave and some would have issues. Please help. Thank you.

Hi @tcelicatech - welcome to this wonderful new world

I’d think the issue is probably on the compas itself.

The fact you moved the compases around (which is a GREAT idea) and have the same issue in different “location” on the same compas tells me it’s either the material which isn’t exactly the same on each unit, or it’s too reflective.

If the surface is shiny, you could try to add some black paint to the surface you are trying to engrave - make sure it is some paint that could be removed by thiner once the engraving is done. Also, you want to make sure the coat is even once dried. Sometimes, painter tape also works.
The goal is to ensure the surface isn’t reflective, and whatever the laser touches can absorb the heat.

Good luck on your project!

Also, to help others, please report back if you find the right solution for your issue!

Cheers!

Thank you so much for your help. I will try the painter tape first. The shiny surface sounds like its might be the issue. So thank you.
