When running ‘Pass 2’ of the ‘Flow rate’ calibration test, I am prompted to “Choose the one with the best coarse”. When I select “5” (which is the best for my printer), a test set is generated which ranges from “0” through “-9”. As I understand it, it should generate a test set “centered” or starting at “5”, rather than “0”.
Additional Information
When I select any value, such as “-20” or “15”, the same behavior is exhibited: the test set generated is still “0” through “-9”.
It appears as though the software is disregarding my selection at the prompt.
Impact
I am unable to continue with Pass 2 of the flow rate calibration since the test set generated is not creating the flow rate range of test prints within the range of my selected value.
Yes, it is - this is a new (first ever for me) printer and fresh installation. Thanks for the insight on 6 - I’ll try downgrading and report the results.
I wanted to post the following update after installing V5.1.7 checking for a behavioral change between 5.x and 6.x .
The results were the same (V5.1.7 also generates Pass 2 tests ranging from 0 - -9). This prompted me to review the documents again and I realized that this is operating as it should. The issue was with my understanding. In my defense, I think it is a little bit unclear and the documentation could benefit from a little more clarity, but again, the “issue” was with me .
My observations (and a few assumptions):
Pass 1 presents multiple “course” test prints from -20 - +20 centered at 0% flow rate adjustment from your current setting.
Pass 2 asks you to then select the best result from pass 1, but I misinterpreted that to mean that if you choose 10, for example, it would then “center” on 10 and print a -/+ spread on that (which would then mean the range printed would be 6 - 14)
Well, I was wrong in this understanding/interpretation:
Pass 2 is designed to print a more granular “spread” (by 1% decrements) starting at what you determined was the smoothest print as a delta; it does not print the literal percentage as Pass 1 does
Pass 2 does not “center”, instead, it prints cards starting at your identified “best” and then prints below them (so, if you select 10, then it prints tests starting at your selected number downward: so, effectively… 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2)
So what does this all mean in simple terms (for anyone else like me that becomes confused by this)?
If you selected ‘10’ as the best test from Pass 1, then Pass 2 will start with a print of ‘0’ (but, this 0 equates to ‘10’, because it’s 0% different from 10… (oof))
it then prints cards down to -9 in 1% decrements
this means that what you’re getting for tests prints are, 10 (what you selected), then 9, 8, 7, 6… and so on
So let’s say the print which says -3 is the best: this means that you need to increase your flow rate -3% from a 10% increase (again, oof). So in doing the math: this means you need to increase your flow rate by by 7% above your current setting)
Editorially: while this ultimately makes sense, I’m of the opinion that it’s not terribly intuitive and clear, so hopefully this helps someone else!
With that said, I’ll be a good internet citizen and submit a feature request via GitHub suggestion that in my opinion, there’s probably a more intuitive way to do this and suggest how, but for now, it appears as though this is not a bug with the software.
