Further explanation of stepped spacer for someone new to laser engraving

New Creality Falcon 10 watt laser engraver.

All set up and running well. I’ve successfully done a number of projects on it but there is one thing for which I don’t have a clear understanding.

The stepped spacer for setting the laser height has the thinnest material listed on the highest step and the thickest on the lowest step. This would indicate to me that the laser is being set to focus on the bottom of the material when you are cutting all the way through.

Where I am confused though is the engraving on top of material setting. Do you always just use the top/thickest step? It is the only step that refers to engraving but I’d like to confirm that is where all engraving height is set regardless of material thickness. This seems logical but can someone confirm this for me.

Thanks,

BH

Top step for engraving most materials to get the optimal focal point. The middle and bottom step are purely for cutting from what I can tell.

At least that’s how I’ve been using it so far! Maybe someone else can clarify if I’ve got anything wrong
