Help a newbie please

Hello everyone,

I have a Ender-3 V2 that has very little run time. The only successful print I’ve ever done was the Luck Cat that came with the printer. I’m using the Creality slicer. I’ve leveled the deck, and tried many troubleshooting suggestions with no success.

Shortly after the print starts, the printer starts printing 4-5 inches above the print job. Is this a firmware issue or a mechanical issue. As you can see in the picture the fimant pile is from the novel printing too far away from the deck.

I figured it out. The filament is wrapped so tightly around the spool that the extruder ends up walking itself up the Z axis.

Are there any methods people use to prevent this? As the print job progressed I had to loosen the filament.
