Hi everyone, new Creality user here — plus a filament storage question

Hey all, just joined the forum! Got my first Creality printer (K1) a few weeks ago and really enjoying it so far. PLA has been printing great.

I do have a question though — I live in a pretty humid area (my room sits around 65% RH), and I’m noticing my PETG getting stringy with rough surfaces lately. Pretty sure it’s moisture.

A few things I’m curious about:

  1. How do you store filament long-term? Dry box, sealed containers, desiccant packs, or leave it out?
  2. Do you actually measure the RH inside your storage, or just guess?
  3. For PETG that’s already stringy — is a dryer worth it, or will sealed storage with desiccant fix it over time?

Still figuring out the best setup, so curious what works in practice for you all. Thanks!

As i live in a far less humid area the problem is not that big for me.

  1. I store them in plastic bag with some desiccant in them.
  2. Measure is the only good answer, there are some diy drybox designs with meters in them.
  3. A dryer is in my experience needed.

Meine gängigen Rollen lagere ich in Klarsichtboxen des bekannten schwedischen Möbelhauses getrennt nach Sorte des Filaments. Die Deckelkante rundum mit Dichtband abkleben, Hydrometer von Ali und entsprechende Menge Silikagel mit in die Box, Deckel und Clipse drauf. Hat bisher gut funktioniert. Seltener genutzte oder auch hochwertige Rollen kommen nach Gebrauch wieder in eine Vakuumtüte mit Silikagel und werden dunkel und nach Möglichkeit kühl gelagert. Ein Trockner ist nach meiner Meinung ein klares Muss.

Thanks for the detailed setup — the IKEA box + sealing tape + hygrometer combo sounds really clean. Do you actually check the hygrometer reading regularly, and roughly what RH do you see inside the boxes? Also curious about the vacuum bags — do you reuse them, or swap new ones?

Thanks! Honestly jealous of the low-humidity climate haha. The “measure it” advice keeps coming up, and I think that’s my main takeaway too. What RH do you aim to stay under where you store yours?

Durch die Klarsichtbox ist der Hygrometer ja ständig ablesbar, so dass es kein Problem ist diesen abzulesen. Wenn die maximale Luftfeuchtigkeit erreicht ist, wird das gesättigte Silikagel gegen trockenes ausgetauscht. Vakuumbeutel werden so lange wiederverwendet, bis sie undicht sind. Bei der max. Luftfeuchtigkeit richte ich mich nach dieser Tabelle:

I’d definitely dry it first—PETG is basically a moisture magnet. I use sealed storage with plenty of desiccant and a hygrometer. If it’s already stringy, drying usually brings it back. geo dash
