Issue with CFS. Spool not rotating fast enough to take up retracted filament

I have just purchased a Creality Hi Combo and have an issue with the filament not retracting onto the spool in the CFS. I have a reel of filament that is about 2/3rds used and the spool is not spinning fast enough to keep the retracted filament tight on the spool. Hence it is looping outside the spool and causing an error.

Is there a way to increase the speed that the spool spins when retracting?

Many thanks

Paul

Hello @PaulB
Welcome to the Creality Forum…! Creality-Logo

Some of the rolls from certain companies might not catch on the top rollers because they are a little smaller. When full, the weight of the roll is enough to give it traction and spin but when they are lighter and they don’t catch on the top of the cover they just slip if that makes sense.

Also make sure the cover is closed firmly and check if the roll hits the top rollers. Compare the roll size to another roll that works. For comparison the Creality spools are about 200mm.

Many thanks for your quick reply. I have filament from 4 different companies, they are all the same size spool and you are correct, they do not reach the top buffers. I wonder why Creality use larger spools and not make their CFS units compatible with, what I assume, is industry standards. Maybe to force you to buy their filament!

Do you know of any way to overcome this. If not, I am already regretting my decision to buy this printer.

There are a number of mods that can be done to the CFS unit to resolve this. The most complex is replacing the spring buffers inside the lid with thicker pads (search printables/makerworld for this), A simpler fix is to print rims for your filament reels to make them fit - I’ve done that with some cardboard rolls.

Or the simplest fix I’ve found is to put a heavy 2.5cm ball inside the centre of the filament reel to give it weight. This can be anything from a large steel ball bearing to one of those Chinese hand exercise balls, or a circular lead weight. Works well!

I’m not sure what other spools you are using but the Creality Spools and other name brands work fine in the CFS. I don’t know if there is an industry standard but most all major brands including Creality use the 200mm spool so no one is “forcing” you to buy their product.

Thanks GSV_NFA, I have found a few solutions, deeper buffers and spool rims. I will give them a go.

Thanks, I suppose it was a bit of a rant. I have a lot of Sunlu filament for my existing printer and a couple of others and they are all 195mm diameter reels. I have found some modifications to increase the buffer size and hopefully this will cure my issue.
