K1 Max – Extremely Loud Grinding Noise from Belt / Rollers Area (Possible Used Unit?)

Hello everyone,

I would appreciate some advice from experienced K1 Max users.

I recently purchased a K1 Max, and from the very first prints I noticed a very sharp, unpleasant grinding noise coming from the belt and roller area. The sound is loud and clearly not normal for a CoreXY machine.

This is not a typical movement or vibration sound — it feels mechanical and concerning.

I tried:

  • Adjusting belt tension

  • Checking pulley alignment

  • Inspecting rollers

  • Running calibration

Nothing helped. The noise remains.

During a closer inspection, I also noticed that some screws on the rollers differ from factory screws, which makes me question whether the unit was previously opened or serviced before I received it.

My questions:

  1. Has anyone experienced similar grinding noise on K1 Max?

  2. Could this be belt misalignment, damaged bearings, bad idlers?

  3. Is this safe to run long term?

  4. Is this normal for K1 Max (I doubt it)?

I have attached a video where the noise can be clearly heard.

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Thank you.

Only dumb fucks move the carriage this way without disconnecting the steppermotor! Moving it at this speed the stepper motor now generates voltage that goes to the motherboard… Motherboard doesn’t like that.

Watching you video, it looks like your timing belt is hitting the edge of gear that is on the stepper motor. Something is nog alligned properly.

I use 2 Creality K1 Max printers at work and 1 at home…
