Loading filament from CFS - odd behaviour?

Hi there and thanks for reading,

Fresh install of the CFS on my K1 Max, which was working fine before the installation. I think I’m having issues with loading the filament:

I feed filament into one of the available positions on the CFS, it takes it, and feeds it through the buffer and about 3/4 of the way to the hotend, then retracts it back, past the buffer and, I think, past the extruder, because it gives a solid white light and I can freely pull the filament back out.

If I leave the filament, and press the ‘extrude’ button on the K1 Max screen, the button goes grey for about a minute and then reverts to green and I can press it again - the printer doesn’t do anything else.

Here is a link of a video showing the process:

Thank you for any suggestions, as I’m at a loss.

It may be that one of the black cables loosened, plug them in each fully. If loose, they send false signals about the status of the filament.

It might have too much friction in the feed tube. I recall reading that you can’t leave the feed tube to the extruder in it’s original location attached to the E-chain. The pictures and videos I saw showed the feed tube coming over the top of the printer and looping down into the extruder without the glass lid. To use the lid I’m thinking you’d have to use some sort of riser for the top.

From their web page- K1 Series CFS Upgrade Accessory Kit - Creality Store

Note: When upgrading to multicolor printing, the USB port remains functional but will be occupied during the process. Additionally, the PTFE tube must be fed into the printer vertically, which prevents the top cover from fully closing. Improper alignment may lead to tube friction or feeding issues.

Thank you both for your suggestions. To follow up, I’ve:

  • Removed and reset the cables, including doing a continuity test on all the pins to see that they are connecting correctly.
  • Removed the tube from the chain and direct fed it over the top of the printer to the buffer and then the CFS.

While neither of these suggestions cured my issue, it did lead into some more ideas - I drastically shortened ( and also replaced ) the tube going from the buffer to the hotend. Now, it feeds all the way to the hot end correctly.

What seems to be happening is, somewhere, it’s say 'ok, you’ve extruded X amount of filament and still haven’t made it to the hot-end so let’s extract it back out. It’s like it hits a certain length of extrusion and sets off some safety protocol or something.

Anyone have any ideas on what setting may influence that behaviour, as I still need the length on the tubing in order to print correctly.

Thank you kindly!

Just an update for anyone having the same issues:

Contacted Creality support and they are sending me a “material break detection plate for the extruder” that is suppose to repair the issue. I’ll report back when I recieve, and try, the solution.
