Odd K1 Extruder issue (Software, pretty sure)

I’m having an issue with the extruder apparently operating in reverse - extruding when it’s supposed to retract, and vice versa.

I had rooted and modded the K1 with the helper-script, and all was fine. Then I started using CP 5.1.x.x.x Out of the blue, it seems that it thinks it’s printing fine, but does not pull filament. It clicks pretty rhythmically.

I thought ok, filament not in the extruder. Re-set and re-set and re-set. No joy. At that point, I assumed something was sideways with the mod, and not knowing klipper/mainsail/fluidd etc well enough, I reset the printer back to factory.

Last night, in CP 5.1, I pulled down a couple of the test models listed in CP, and they printed just fine.
Yet, when I print something that is not a creality test model, it just phantom prints, seemingly endless, backing the filament out of the extruder.

Any ideas?

Hello @wt1w …!

Welcome to the Creality Forum…! Creality

Creality Print 5.xx is going through some tough times here so maybe download Creality Print 4.xx just for ruling out software issues that may be causing it. Download Here :arrow_right: V4.3.8.7062

You can run both version separately on the PC so you don’t have to uninstall 5.xx

Yes, I had that same thought. Just tried to print something with 4.x, and all it does is wander around in the shape of the model. It leaves traces on the plate, but not actual print. I really thought it was under-extrusion (mechanical issue), but it will print the damn onboard models just fine. Did a cube and a truncated cone, whipped em right out, and they were perfect (last night). Just tried to print a filament reel with 4.x, and it’s just a hot mess.

I just started a “Standard model” out of CP 4 - a pyramid. I’ll upload a pic when it finishes, but it is gonna print fine, I’m sure.

What’s weird, is that I’m slicing the standard out of CP4. Same thing I sliced that reel with.

And there it is. The standard model out of CP printed just fine. No slicer settings changed at all.

This is literally 5 minutes after I aborted the other print.

What happens if you just hit the extrude function. Does it extrude normally…?

Yep. That is what convinced me it wasn’t the extruder. I did several runs of extrude, and it pooped out filament every time.

So the mechanics are working ok. Hmm. Don’t know. Sorry. Looks like we’re getting past my pay grade here… :face_with_monocle:

Someone here might know what’s going on with it.

Try a reset again.??

I haven’t rooted or done anything to my K1 Max. Don’t know enough yet to figure all that out…

LOL - thanks for giving it a shot. I figured I had screwed something up with installing the helper-script stuff (which had been working fine) - so like I said, took it back to factory.

All the mechanical bits are working just fine, adhesion is spot on, I can extrude at will just fine, so IMO, I’ve ruled out mechanical extruder issues, jammed filament, clogged nozzles, anything like that. It seems like “factory” may not be factory all the way. Like there is a dorked up config leftover somewhere.

Honestly, it works fine without rooting, I’m now just trying to remove any complexity with it. It’s a strange problem.

Retracting when it supposed to extrude seems like it might be wired wrong. Have read a few people having things wired back to front

It’s not going to be wiring. Wiring hasn’t changed, this isn’t a new printer. Also, the “Standard Models” in CP 4 or 5 print just fine. Something changed in the last week or so that seems to be making anything I slice(non Creality models) not print at all.

It sounds like your extruder motor direction might be reversed. Try switching the motor wires or adjusting the firmware settings to correct the motor direction. You can use an online calculator to ensure the correct wiring.

Not a wiring problem. I’ve never touched the wiring in the K1. I took it back to factory, and it prints fine.
Re-rooted it, install helper-script/moonraker/mainsail etc - it goes to shit.

Somewhere a config file is wrong.
