Out of the loop : firmware information questions

Hi everyone ! I’ve been printing quite often for the past few months but stayed out of the loop regarding possible upgrades, firmware updates and so on.
So here are a few questions to refresh my memories, please ?

  • I’m using this firmware :
    Ender-3 V2 Neo-Marlin2.0.8.3-HW-V4.2.2-SW-V1.1.7-CR-Touch-FILAMENT (2023-02-10)
… but I’m confused understanding the naming convention since this one :
    Ender-3 V2 Neo-Marlin2.0.8.3-HW-V4.2.2-SW-V1.1.6-CR-Touch (2024-01-26) seems newer but … a minor downgrade ? : 1.1.7 > 1.1.6 ?
  • I assume the Marlin version for both is Marlin 2.xx right ?
  • What is the “best” firmware right now ? I’ve heard about mriscoc/Ender3V2S1 too and that seems also interesting. Would you recommand it ?
Thank you for your help and your infos !

Hi

Unless you have an issue or want a feature that’s not available don’t update the firmware, it’s printing well you’ll spend ages getting that back.

For the v2 Neo I think there is also a x.8 version too

Professional firmware is good but again if it’s not something you need then I wouldn’t bother

TL;DR only update if there is an issue or feature

Thanks for your answer @amberhelios
I’m not in a hurry to update but indeed I’m looking for features. I would love to get the max I can get from the printer, but I know the update process to be … flimsy : I already failed once previously with the firmware 1.1.8 you mentioned, as it happens.

First check your chip. GD firmware will work okay on SM but not the other away around
