Scanning flat objects with Ferret-CR

I have the Ferret-CR, windows 10, up to date creality scan software. Scanner is hard wired right into my PC tower. Also I have a dedicated scanning area with markers and texture as recommended, Stand for asset and rotating base. Using camera arm for initial scanning and then free hand for final scan portion.

Problem: I am trying to scan the door to my RV’s gas tank. It is flat and thin walled. Approx size 8 1/2” x 6 3/4”. I am using makers. The issue is I cannot get any form of tracking to record. It constantly says do not scan planar surfaces. Or adjust IR which I try to no avail. Also the longer I try to scan it, the more irratice peripheral artifact appears. The scan looks more like meatballs then a flat object.

Thank you in advance and please advise. PS I am new to this so please any advice can be helpful.

Alan

Hi Alan,

Flat surfaces are tricky for the Ferret-CR because the scanner struggles to track without enough features. Try these:

  • Add more markers or stick a temporary patterned sheet on the door for better tracking.

  • Place the door on a textured backing or cardboard with stickers.

  • Use diffuse lighting and, if glossy, a light matte spray to reduce reflections.

  • Scan smaller sections and merge them later.

  • Recheck calibration before scanning.

Adding artificial texture usually fixes the “meatball” artifacts.

All those things are the textbook recommendations. Which I have done. The weird thing is it picks up all the markers but but not the underlying shape. I do not know what a patterned sheet is. But I will research it. Thank you.
