I’ve collected a lot of STL and other 3D printing files over the years, and I’m looking for a better way to organize, search, and preview them.
Currently, I use Windows File Explorer with the Microsoft PowerToys add-on to display STL thumbnails. It kind of works, but it’s a little slow. I’m wondering what other systems or programs you guys are using, whether free or paid.
A few I’ve read about include:

- F3D
- Papa’s Best STL Thumbnails
- STL Library
What do you use to manage your 3D print file collection? I’d especially like something that can quickly display previews and organize files using folders, tags, categories, or searchable descriptions.
Please share what you use, what you like or dislike about it, and whether you think it is worth the cost if it’s not free.

I see these as two different solutions. Fortunately, I was able to preserve an existing installation of the now-discontinued 3D Builder, along with the working File Explorer thumbnail support on that machine. Microsoft ended support for 3D Builder and removed it from the Microsoft Store in July 2024. Existing installations may continue to work, but it can no longer be installed normally through the Store.
There are community installation workarounds on GitHub, but the one I found would not work on my company-managed Windows 11 system. Whether Windows 11 itself blocked it or our corporate security policies were responsible, I cannot say.
I see the second issue as folder organization. Claude Desktop can do this very well if you enable filesystem access and grant it permission to the relevant folders. Some people may reasonably object to providing that access, but its scope can be limited to a specific folder tree, such as the 3D Objects folder. It can then examine the filenames and move the files into appropriate subfolders. It did a remarkable job for organizing many of my folders. It even thought of naming structures I likely would have missed.
