what is the 2w IR laser correct Focus distance 3mm?

Hi everyone, first post here. Just wondering if anyone can help me with my new 2w ir laser for the A1 pro. The problem I am having seems to be a very weak laser. It took a while to get it focused because the height from nozel to material is 3.2mm and I thought 7mm was normal? At 7mm it wont even mark basswoodCould someone confirm that 3.2mm is a normal optimal height? Even after finding the optamal focus point marking any type of metal can only be achieved at 200mm/m 100% power to get a very faint mark and sometimes requiring multiple pass’s to even get that. At this point I really do think it has to be faulty? Any ideas or help would be great. Thanks in advance.

IR has little effect on wood. Use the 20W module for that. It should work on metal though. The auto focus should get it right. Just make sure you are actually focusing on the height that you’ll engrave later, shiny metal might need to be covered by some tape or so that the auto focus laser dot is detected correctly.

When you say “the auto focus should get it right” does that mean the top step (7mm)? Thats what it does, exactly 7mm. At 7mm it wont leave any trace on the material even after 10 pass’s. 3.2mm seems to be the best focal point. I’ve now done hours and hours with all sorts of materials and from watching youtube videos there has to be something im missing or there is something wrong with the laser. Is the module when it’s installed flush with the carriage when it’s in the top position? Is the lens fully screwed in the module? Yes the top step should be good for engraving. Have you tried putting some metal like a “ramp” to go from 7mm to 3mm, does it really get better? Could be that the module got adjusted to a wrong focus in the factory but that would be unusual.

Hi, yes it is flush with the carriage, yes I have tested from 8mm - 2mm in 0.1mm increments and it’s a no to checking the lens. I am now dealing with Creality specialists (apparently) to try and figure it out. I will check the lens though. Thanks for your input.

I guess the module is focused incorrectly then, if you actually see it being in focus at around 3mm (manually focused) it also can’t be a auto focus issue, which is kind of common and can easily be calibrated.

Sent all information to creality and they seem to be dancing around this simple question “IS 3.2MM THE RIGHT FOCAL HEIGHT FOR THE 2W INFRARED LASER OR NOT?”. I’m pretty sure I know the reason why they wont anwser that simple question. Anyway not happy and thanks for trying to help. I’ll be busy on other forums until they get the message. Cheers

According to creality engineers the results in the photo are normal. Would be nice to see someone else post there results on an aluminium buisiness card. The settings are in the photo.

The photo of the cards is also a little deceiving. You can only see the engraving at certain angles and is invisible at most angles. 20w = 20w diode laser same settings as photo. 2w=2w Infrared laser with same settings. Yes I know you shouldnt do that with the 20w laser. Thanks in advance to anyone who posts some pictures of same settings and material. Thanks

Normal? (7mm) Top step 10 pass test at 100% and power 200mm/m on stainless.

Test- (5mm) mid step 10 pass 100% power 200mm/m. At least you can see the mark from most angles.
27 minutes for a very small and very average mark. If I was to use the recommended settings I would be completly wasting my time.

If this is Normal for this laser, I just wasted $1000+ because I bought all the bits and pieces on top of the laser module. I have a few creality machines and to be told this is what to expect for my $700 is a slap in the face.
