What's the expected tonal range when engraving basswood? Mine seems limited

I have the 60W. Been making material test experiments with basswood. I’m beginning to think that basswood doesn’t have a wide range of tone when burned. I am seeing a golden brown that goes from faint to full quickly (when faint lots of bare patches) to grey. In other words, it quickly transitions from golden brown to grey/burnt out. From there it progresses to the same grey color, burning burning deeper.

In this first image, there’s not much of a range, but no burning. Ignore the burnt text, that’s coming through from the back.

In this next image I raised the upper power limit from 15% to 20%. You can see that halfway through the power range, it passed the threshold, leaving nothing but grey, getting progressively deeper.

Do these results look correct to you? Very new to lasers here!

I came over here because you mentioned this is not a very active forum. You are right about that.

As for your cuts? Yup, that is what I get when working with bass plywood. I only use that stuff for making things, like parts. Not for engraving. The hardwood packs available on line are much better.

By hardwood pack … are you referring to hardwood ply or solid hardwood?
