I bought a used Ender-3 V3 SE, should I reset it before starting to print?

This is my first ever 3D printer and I haven’t done much else than ran the auto bed leveling a few times. There were a few odd values but after cleaning under the build plate the smoothed out. I also tightened a few screws that seemed quite loose.

  1. Should I reset it before starting any prints?
  2. Can the printer even be “factory reset”?
  3. If yes, can a reset do some harm, e.g., delete some necessary configurations?
  4. Should I check if the printer FW can be upgraded to a newer version?
  5. Is there a way to check the hours this printer has been used printing? If this is even relevant…

The printer should be about 1.5 years old but I was told that it hasn’t seen much use at all in the last 6 months or so. The previous owner was a hobbyist so it can’t be so used.

I don’t think you need to factory reset this machine. I would start by printing something and see how it runs, see if the z-offset needs adjusting. There are 4 screws, 2 each side of the leadscrew, do not fully tighten these, nip them up tight then back them off 1/2 to a full turn, this float will allow for any leadscrew play.

If you really want to factory reset you can either load new firmware or:-

  1. Go to the printer’s Control menu
  2. Select Reset configuration
  3. Follow the prompts on the screen

Factory reset clears any sus Gcode that may have been sent to the printer, it also does all the calibration you should do when moving the printer. It doesnt hurt to do it but can fix numerous problems, I would do it. Its on the printer menu
