Can this cable be home made? If so, what is the smaller male connector called?
Theoretically can be home made, however, the connectors are small like the tip of a needle, so needs a lot of jewelry work. the connectors are available on digi electronics.
Look this threads about the cables
Yes and no, if usually those smaller crimp are done by machine, but you can get pre-made connector and slice wiring together to suit. Its like 5 bucks from local dealer for the cable or less than dollar, shipping will cost most in most cases. If you don’t already have crimper tool and crimp its may end up costing more and time.
I believe these are JST SH1.0 connectors with 1.0mm pitch that need to be constructed with crimping tool/pliers.
These are all available at Amazon for example, not really expensive if you’re into electronics.
